Tragedy struck in Roadside District St Ann last night when a man believed to be of unsound mind severed the head of a two-year-old boy and slit the throat of a man.

The alleged attacker is said to be a relative of the two-year-old.

According to residents, the incident occurred about seven last night.

The residents say the alleged killer, who has a history of mental illness, armed himself with a machete, grabbed the two-year-old and pulled him into a garage reportedly operated by his father.

They say the man used the machete to severe the child's head.

He then allegedly approached another man and chopped him in his neck.

The attacker, who fled to a neighboring district, was chased and tied up by residents.

When the police arrived, the child's body was removed and the injured man was taken to the St Ann's Bay Hospital.

The alleged attacker was also taken to hospital under police guard.
