KINGSTON, Jamaica:

The family of Mario Deane has made good on their promise to hire an independent pathologist to determine what caused his death earlier this month.

Deane died in hospital on August 6, following a brutal beating he received at the Barnett Street Police Station in Montego Bay, St James three days earlier.

The police have maintained that Deane was beaten by cellmates but that has been disputed by his family.

Michael Lorne, the attorney representing Deane's family, has confirmed, that noted US Forensic pathologist, Dr Michael Baden will examine his body next Tuesday at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

Baden, a former Chief Medical Examiner for New York City, recently performed an autopsy on 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri earlier this month sparking mass protests and riots.

Baden has also served as an expert witness in several criminal cases including, the trial of OJ Simpson.
