JLP calls for JUTC board and transport minister's removal
The Jamaica Labour Party is calling for the removal of Transport Minister, Dr Omar Davies over his handling of the recent Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus fare increases.
According to opposition spokesman on transport, Dr Horace Chang, Davies arrogantly breached the trust of many Jamaicans including the Civil Service Association by his failure to honour promises made to civil society groups.
Chang also cited the Transport minister’s failure to consult with any groups prior to the announcement of fare increases, and what he says is Davies’ “highly questionable efforts to remove public transport from the remit of the OUR’
The JLP is also calling on the Government to take immediate action to correct the path of failure on which the management of Jamaica's Transportation sector is now travelling.
The opposition is also supporting a call made by JCSA president, Oniel Grant yesterday for the immediate removal of the Garnett Roper-led Board of Directors and Colin Campbell from the post of Managing Director.
According to Chang, blame for the lack of reforms at the JUTC should be laid squarely at their feet.
Chang also asserts that neither Roper nor Campbell have the requisite experience in logistics or transportation management to turn around the JUTC.
The Opposition Spokesman also wants the Managing Director's post to be advertised quickly, in light of the Government's statements about the JUTC's perilous position.
Chang maintains that if the government is serious about bringing growth to the Jamaican economy it must ensure that it appoints qualified people and that Ministers do not breach the trust of the Jamaican people in seeking to implement change.
