US attorney in Mario Deane case expected at press conference Monday

Prominent American attorney Jasmine Rand is scheduled to visit Jamaica to show support for the family of Mario Deane.

Rand was part of the legal team that represented the family of Trayvon Martin, the black teen who was shot and killed in the US State of Florida by neighbourhood watchman George Zimmerman.

She is scheduled to appear at a press conference in Kingston on Monday and is expected to use the occasion to call international attention to Deane’s death.

Rand is also expected to add her voice to the growing calls for the Jamaican Government and the Independent Commission of Investigations to conduct a fair and impartial probe into Deane’s death.

The press conference is schedule to take place one day before famed American pathologist Dr Michael Baden conducts an independent autopsy on Deane’s body.

Baden was part of the team that re-investigated the assassination of former US President John F Kennedy and most recently conducted an independent autopsy on the body of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teen who was shot and killed by a white police officer in the state of Missouri.

Mario Deane was taken into custody by the police for a small quantity of marijuana, but was pronounced dead 3 days later after he was viciously beaten while in custody at the Barnett Street Police Station, in Montego Bay.
