A man believed to be of unsound mind is now dead, while a police corporal he reportedly shot with a speargun has been admitted to the Falmouth Hospital in stable condition.

The dead man is 49-year-old Andrew Ferguson.

It is reported that the policeman, who is attached to the Trelawny Division, was conducting a spot check in Greenwood, at the border of St James and Trelawny, yesterday, when Ferguson crept up behind him and shot him in his neck with the gun used by fishermen.

Ferguson reportedly used the gun to beat the cop in his head after shooting him and it was while he was doing this that another policeman shot him.

He was pronounced dead at hospital.

Reports are that this was not the first time that the dead man has attacked a member of the security force.
