Sir Hilary Beckles next UWI vice-chancellor
Leading Caribbean historian, Sir Hilary Beckles, will be the next vice-chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI).
He will replace Professor E Nigel Harris who will step down from the position in April.
Professor Harris has been UWI vice-chancellor for ten years.
The incoming vice-chancellor is the principal of the university's campus in Cave Hill in Barbados.
In a statement today making the announcement, UWI said said the advertisement for the post attracted in excess of 50 applicants from all over the world.
Chair of the search committee, Dr Marshall Hall said the list was narrowed down to seven, then three, and that the committee arrived at a consensus that Sir Hilary was the preferred candidate.
Meanwhile, UWI Chancellor Sir George Alleyne said Sir Hilary would bring to the position "impeccable academic credentials, impressive managerial skills and the gravitas that such an office required."
Sir George added that he is confident that the incoming vice-chancellor would have the confidence and support of the university's many and diverse stakeholders.
Sir Hilary will be the seventh vice-chancellor of the 66-year-old university.
The vice-chancellor is responsible for, among other things, the efficient running of the University.
