Prisoner in Dominica recaptured after four years

Published:Tuesday | September 9, 2014 | 9:25 AM

The Police in Dominica say they have recaptured a prisoner who had been serving a 40 year jail sentence for murder.

Steven Alphonse escaped on January 27, 2010 while prisoners were engaged in removing coal from a pit.

He is expected to appear in court later this week on charges related to his escape from prison.

Alphonse had been sentenced to death in 1993 for the brutal murder of a young woman, but he appealed the case in 2007 and the sentence was commuted to 40 years in jail.

He escaped custody on two previous occasions.

On one of those instances, he's reported to have made his way to the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe.
