$1.5m bail for 62-year-old taxi driver in fatal Helshire crash

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica:

The driver of the ill-fated car which resulted in the death of a mother and child has been granted $1.5 million bail.




He is 62-year-old taxi-operator George Richardson of Helshire Park, St Catherine.



He is charged with the deaths of 39-year-old Jaharian Durrant and five-year-old Jascinth Haynes both of Hellshire Heights in St Catherine.



When the case was mentioned Attorney-at-law Andrew Irving said Richardson was not a flight-risk and will return for his trial.



Bail was originally set at $2 million the lawyer successfully asked that it be reduced to $1.5 million.



The accident occurred about about 6 a.m. on September 3 along the Hellshire Main Road in St Catherine.



It was reported that Richardson was driving his motorcar with six passengers along the Hellshire Main road when he overtook a line of traffic and crashed into a utility pole.



Durrant and Haynes suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at hospital.



Richardson is to reappear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on December 9.
