Tension in Salt Spring, St James after killing of gangster

Published:Wednesday | September 10, 2014 | 1:09 PM

The police in St James are maintaining their presence in the Salt Spring community where things are now reportedly tense following yesterday’s murder of the leader of the notorious Stone Crusher gang, Eldon Calvert.

A contingent of police and soldiers were seen patrolling the streets of the St James community this morning.

Head of the St James Police Division, Senior Superintendent Egbert Parkins says the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are not immediately clear.

Calvert was once the country's most wanted man.

He attracted further attention in February 2012 after he was freed of a murder charge when the court held that the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Michael Sirjue, fabricated the evidence.

When the murder case against Calvert and two other men had to be thrown out, Senior Puisne judge Gloria Smith had remarked that it was "a very sad day in the history of justice".
