No concession without smarter cards - JUTC

Published:Sunday | September 14, 2014 | 9:56 PM

Commuters who benefit from concession fares will now only be able to access those rates using a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) Smarter Card.

This as the state-run bus company implemented a cashless system for concession beneficiaries at midnight, Saturday. Beneficiaries include students, the elderly and the disabled.

Only persons paying the adult fare of J$120 will be allowed the option to pay by cash on its regular buses. In a release this morning, the company said there was no deadline in place to implement a fully cashless system for adults.

In the meantime, JUTC says the top floor of the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre was opened at 8:00 this morning and will remain open until 10 p.m., to facilitate persons picking up concession cards.

It says the Spanish Town bus park was also opened at 9:00 this morning and will remain open until 5 p.m. today, as well as its East Parade office in downtown Kingston to accommodate commuters.
