INDECOM receives Mario Deane post-mortem report

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has now received a report from the government pathologist who conducted the post-mortem on Mario Deane, the St James man who was allegedly beaten in police custody and later died in hospital.

The post-mortem was carried out earlier this month at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

INDECOM says the document will assist in its probe into Deane’s death and determinations on whether any members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force should be charged.

Mario Deane died in hospital on August 6 from injuries he received from an alleged beating at the Barnett Street Police Station in Montego Bay, St James.

The police have maintained that Deane was beaten by cellmates but that has been disputed by his family.

Two inmates have since been charged with Deane’s murder and are before the courts.

One police corporal and two constables have been interdicted and three district constables have been suspended arising from Deane’s beating.
