REGIONAL: 57 Haitians detained in Turks and Caicos

Published:Saturday | September 20, 2014 | 9:40 PM

The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) has confirmed that 57 Haitian migrants were detained this morning in its territorial waters.

The 43 men, 12 women and two children were reportedly found in a boat that was intercepted in the waters off the coast of the overseas British territory.

The government says they will be deported.

This is the second group of Haitian migrants intercepted in the TCI this month.

At the start of the month, TCI authorities detained 82 migrants as their boat passed near the chain of islands, which is often used by Haitians to gain illegal entry into the United States or The Bahamas.
