11 firearms seized by police in last 48 hours

A powerful AK47 assault rifle was among 11 firearms seized by the police in the last 48 hours across the island.



Five men have been arrested in relation to the seizure of the deadly weapons.



Ninety-six rounds of ammunition were also seized.



The largest seizure was made in the community of Rosemount in St James, where seven firearms were removed from a motor vehicle on Saturday morning.



The police say they approached a group of men standing beside the vehicle.



The men reportedly ran as the police approached.



A search of the vehicle revealed weapons including a Glock 19, Heckler and Koch 945 and Colt point 45 pistols.



Later on Saturday in Clarendon, the police say they found a homemade firearm at a premises in Kemps Hill and arrested and charged 34-year-old Rohil Martin, for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.



Yesterday in Westmoreland, the police took four men into custody after seizing four firearms during an operation in Farm Pen district.



An Intratec nine millimeter sub-machine gun, an AK47 Assault rifle and an MK rifle were seized.
