T&T adopts zero tolerance approach to terrorism

Executive Director of the National Operations Centre (NOC) in Trinidad and Tobago, Garvin Heerah says the country is adopting a zero tolerance approach towards terrorism.

He also warned that the threat from Islamic fundamentalism and radicalisation posed by terrorist groups such as Isis was real and at the country’s doorsteps.

Heerah said the threat of radicalisation and the wanton disregard for human rights, safety and security was also real.

According to the NOC Executive Director, the national security agencies are embarking on stringent strategies and contingencies to tackle the increasing threat.

He says this involves the formation of a specialised intelligence unit that will carry out overt and covert surveillance on terrorism-related matters, working closely with the Financial intelligence Unit and monitoring people of interest.
