Derrick Kellier appointed Agriculture Minister, Luther Buchanan his junior
The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has announced the appointment of Derrick Kellier as Agriculture Minister with immediate effect.
However, Kellier will keep the portfolios for Labour and Social Security.
Kellier had been acting as Agriculture and Fisheries Minister from July when the now deceased Roger Clarke left Jamaica to undergo a surgical operation in the United States.
Clarke died in August while preparing to depart the Miami Airport for Jamaica.
In the meantime, Luther Buchanan has been assigned as Minister of State for Agriculture, Labour and Social Security.
In his new assignment, Buchanan will retain responsibility for Rural Development, one of his areas of Ministerial duty while he was Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister.
The OPM said the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security will continue to be designated as separate Ministries within the Government under the guidance of the Minister and Minister of State.
Meanwhile, Simpson Miller says agriculture remains one of the key growth areas within the Government’s economic programme and the portfolio will continue to receive focused attention at the ministerial, technical and operational levels.
Kellier is slated to represent the Government of Jamaica at the Caribbean Week of Agriculture being held in Paramaribo, Suriname from October 6-12 in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Secretariat.
