CAPI takes issue with new agri minister's appointment

Lobby group Citizens’ Action For Principles And Integrity (CAPI) says the Labour and Social Security portfolio should be taken from Derrick Kellier if he is to perform as agriculture minister.

Kellier had been acting as Agriculture and Fisheries Minister since the sudden death of Roger Clarke.

Yesterday the Office of the Prime Minister announced he would officially keep that portfolio while continuing with Labour and social security.

However, CAPI’s co-convenor, Dennis Meadows argues that given the importance of agriculture the portfolio requires a dedicated Minister.

He says CAPI supports Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller’s decision not to add to the Cabinet in an effort to save cost.

However, he says CAPI believes she could have reconfigured the current Cabinet to ensure that the agriculture ministry is afforded a dedicated minister.

The Opposition Jamaica Labour party has also questioned the government's decision to appoint Kellier as Agriculture Minister in addition to his Labour and Social Security Portfolios.

Kellier's shadow minister, J.C. Hutchinson says while it's good that Kellier will receive help with the Agriculture portfolio from Luther Buchanon, Hutchinson says it is unfortunate that he too will be sharing his focus among several portfolios.
