A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed between The University of the West Indies (UWI) and eight members of the Teachers’ Colleges of Jamaica which will see the UWI awarding degrees to some of its students.

The UWI will award degrees in 18 Bachelor of Education programmes delivered through the teachers’ colleges.

Speaking at the signing ceremony yesterday Education Minister Ronald Thwaites said the MOU serves to boost the government’s thrust of having teachers upgrade their training.

Thwaites disclosed that there are about 11,000 teachers in the education system who have not yet advanced to the bachelor’s degree level.

He says it is important that teachers re-certify themselves in keeping with changes in educational advancements.
