Bahamian police detain 20 more Haitians

Published:Wednesday | October 8, 2014 | 10:02 PM

Less than 24 hours after announcing they had detained 24 Haitians who sought to enter the island illegally over the weekend, law enforcement authorities in the Bahamas say they have detained 20 more people from the French-speaking country.

The police said that they had detained 13 men and six women as well as one male juvenile during an operation carried out in the West End area on Monday.

The Haitians have been handed over to immigration authorities.

The authorities in the Bahamas have been urging Haitian migrants not to undertake the dangerous crossing from the French-speaking country in boats that are not sea worthy.

The migrants usually use the Bahamas as a stepping stone for entry into the United States.
