Chik-V briefing expected today

Published:Thursday | October 9, 2014 | 9:15 AM

Journalists are to be updated on the government’s efforts to fight the country’s chikungunya outbreak this morning.

Last week, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller activated the National Emergency Response Machinery at a Level 2, to provide coordination and monitoring for the chik-V outbreak.

Under Level 2 activation, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is the national coordinator for the response, while the Ministry of Health provides technical leadership.

The Jamaica Defence Force handles the logistics coordination of the clean-up effort.

It is expected that the three agencies will provide an update on their efforts to curb the spread of the sometimes fatal virus.

The briefing, at the Office of the Prime Minister, will be chaired by Information Minister, Senator Sandrea Falconer.
