REGIONAL: US disappointed with Belize barring couple, woman suspected of having Ebola

The United States (US) has expressed disappointment with the decision of the Belizean Government to bar an American couple, including a woman suspected of having the Ebola virus, from leaving a cruise ship in Belize.

The couple was also barred from using the Phillip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) in Belize to be flown back to the US.

The ship is expected to dock in the US State of Texas tomorrow.

Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department Marie Harf says the situation could have been handled differently.

Harf conceded that the Ebola virus pose a serious threat, but said decisions like these need to be made based on information and science and not fear.

However, the prime minister of Belize Dean Barrow insists that his administration was not taking any chances that could put the lives of Belizeans at risk.
