INTERNATIONAL: New York police say axe attack was an act of terrorism

Published:Saturday | October 25, 2014 | 2:06 PM

Police in New York City, in the United States, say an axe attack on two officers was a terrorist act carried out by a radicalised Muslim convert.

The attacker 32-year-old Zale Thompson was shot dead after wounding the two officers in Queens on Thursday.

Police Commissioner William Bratton says Thompson was not on any watchlists, but had browsed al-Qaeda websites and watched beheadings.

Bratton says the incident took just seven seconds and praised what he described as the extraordinary bravery of the officers.

Witnesses say the man deliberately targeted the foot-patrol officers, charging them and then swinging the axe two-handed.

One officer was hit on the head and is now hospitalised in critical but stable condition while the other officer was hit on the arm.
