Five in custody after MOCA operation at Accountant General’s Department

Published:Tuesday | October 28, 2014 | 5:23 PM

An employee of the Accountant General’s Department is among five persons who remain in police custody this afternoon in connection with a major multimillion-dollar fraud at the agency.

Police investigators today carried out a raid on the department’s office as part of the probe.

The operation was led by the Revenue Protection Division with assistance from the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA).

Large volumes of files were seized by detectives in the operation.

They also temporarily took the cellphones of employees to prevent them from alerting outside persons.

The police say the probe surrounds irregularities and fraudulent activities totaling several million dollars.

They say the fraud was uncovered through the Finance Ministry’s continued modernisation efforts and adherence to strict protocols laid down by the Central Treasury Management System.
