Uruguay registering cannabis growers' clubs

Published:Saturday | November 1, 2014 | 11:07 PM

Uruguay has started registering cannabis growers' clubs as part of the government's plan to legalise the drug.

Licensed clubs of up to 45 members will be allowed to grow a maximum of 99 plants each year.

The legislation also allows each club member to produce no more than 480 grams of cannabis each year and the club's growing fields cannot be within 150 metres of a school, college or a drug rehabilitation centre.

In August, Uruguay made it legal for farmers to grow up to six cannabis plants at home.

Last December Uruguay also legalised the production and sale of cannabis and the government hopes to sell it from pharmacies in the new year.
