Woman accused of stabbing 11-month-old daughter to death deemed unfit to plead

A woman accused of stabbing her 11-month-old daughter to death in 2013 was deemed unfit to plea to the charge of murder when her case was mentioned in the St Elizabeth Circuit Court yesterday.



Shanika McKellar was taken into custody in February last year following the stabbing death of her 11-month-old daughter, Sabrina Joseph, in Lewis Town, Black River, St Elizabeth.



I is reported that while in custody, McKellar made several attempts at suicide.



She is reported to have attempted to drink bleach, strangle herself using pieces of her clothing, and slit her wrist with a broken toothbrush.



A psychiatric evaluation was ordered and she was found unfit to plea.



McKellar is now out on bail and is receiving treatment.



She is scheduled to return to court in February 2015.



At that time her progress will be evaluated, and a decision made on how to proceed with the matter.
