Teachers owed by Government to get monies by month-end

Published:Monday | November 17, 2014 | 9:22 AM

The Education Ministry says teachers at the 22 schools who are owed salaries by the Government, will get their monies by the the end of the month.

Last week, there were reports of sit-ins in some schools as teachers registered their frustration with the delays over the non-payment arising from a 2007-2008 reclassification exercise.

In a statement, the Education Ministry said it has apologised to the teachers for the delay, which is being blamed on what the ministry calls a time consuming verification process.

However, the Ministry says while the verification process is tedious, it is necessary as it prevents payment errors.

It says the Finance and Education ministries are working feverishly to complete the process.

In its statement last evening, the Education Ministry said the bulk of the island's 24,000 teachers have already received their payments in full.
