17 trapped in Bog Walk Gorge

Published:Saturday | November 29, 2014 | 6:33 PM

The National Works Agency (NWA) has confirmed that 17 persons were trapped inside the Bog Walk Gorge, in St Catherine, this afternoon as heavy rains left the roadway impassable.

It is not clear at this hour if any of those persons have been rescued.

Communications manager at the NWA Stephen Shaw told The Gleaner-Power 106 News Centre that both the Jamaica Defence Force and the Jamaica Fire Department have mobilised personnel and equipment to begin rescue operations.

Public Relations Officer for the Fire Department Emeleo Ebanks confirmed that the rescue efforts were under way and says fire-fighters hope to rescue as many persons as possible before night fall.

Shaw says the roadway inside the gorge remains flooded and urged motorists to use the alternative routes.

Meanwhile, in another weather related incident, Shaw says the Bailey bridge located in West Prospect, St Catherine has collapsed.

As a result, he says motorists should use the Cashew Park Road as an alternative.
