HelpAge International to present ODPEM with volunteer corps

Published:Friday | December 12, 2014 | 10:20 AM

More than 350 community volunteers organised by HelpAge International from the parishes of Portland, St Thomas, St Mary and St Catherine will be presented to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management as a volunteer corps to respond to emergency across vulnerable communities in the parishes.

The presentation is being held at the Jamaica Conference Centre.

Members of the volunteer corps have received trainings such as disaster preparedness and response, emergency radio telecommunications and care of older persons in disasters through HelpAge International Jamaica's 'Mainstreaming Vulnerable Populations in Disaster Risk Reduction in Jamaica' project.

Funding and support was provided by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection, and the US Agency for International Development/Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.

According to Project Manager at HelpAge International Julian McKoy-Davis, “the initiative is geared at strengthening the nation’s disaster-response mechanism in order to facilitate quick responses during times of disasters.

Over the years, the four parishes involved, have been labeled disaster-prone - suffering from frequent flooding and landslides.

As such, equipping these volunteers will result in building communities that can sustain themselves during vulnerable periods.”
