Education minister confirms Morant Bay High principal's dismissal

The Education Ministry is confirming reports first carried by The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre that the principal of the Morant Bay High School in St Thomas, Dr Dalton Shaw, has been fired.

Our news centre reported yesterday that the board, chaired by Reverend Everald Galbraith, decided to fire Shaw after considering a report on his performance at a meeting last Thursday.

Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, told our news centre this that the chairman met with him and informed him of the decision.

Shaw's sacking resulted from a board-led investigation into complaints contained in a letter submitted by teachers in October.

Our news centre had obtained a copy of the October 16 letter which detailed serious allegations against the principal.

Teachers have accused Shaw of making unilateral decisions, disregarding the input of senior members of the teaching staff, and threatening to erode the profile of Morant Bay High as a traditional school.

Shaw, who became principal during the last school year, previously served at the Mineral Heights Primary School in Clarendon.

The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre has not been able to reach Shaw for comment.
