Police Command stands behind head of St Thomas police

The Police High Command has responded to questions raised regarding the suitability of Deputy Superintendent of Police Charmaine Shand to lead the St Thomas police division.

The matter was raised during yesterday's meeting of the St Thomas Parish Council where councilors accused members of the police force in the parish of victimising them.

The matter was worsened when Councilor Constantine Bogle questioned the qualifications of Acting Commander for the St Thomas police, Deputy Superintendent Charmaine Shand to lead the St Thomas police and called for an investigation into her appointment.

However, the police high command says DSP Shand enjoys its full confidence.

The High Command says this confidence in DSP Shand is based on her performance as head of the division and her ability to lead at that level.

It says this confidence in her has also been expressed by the men and women under her command.

The High Command says it also takes note of the overwhelming support DSP Shand has received from leading residents of the parish.

Meanwhile, the High Command says it would rather complaints about its members be dealt with through the proper channels than in the public domain or in the media

Yesterday's accusations by the councillors followed an incident on Wednesday in which a PNP councilor was arrested and subsequently released by the St Thomas police.
