The education ministry says Jamaica is 7.6 per cent below its target of having 85 per cent of students in the grade four cohort achieving mastery of literacy this year.

Last year, 77 per cent of the age cohort achieved mastery in literary.

Education Minister Rev Ronald Thwaites says this represents a 30 per cent increase over the last 10 year.

While acknowledging the improvement, Thwaites cautioned that the average annual increase has been three per cent per year.

He says the final measurement will be made after this year’s sitting of the test.
