Residents block roads, light cane fields over motorcyclist's death in police chase
Westmoreland residents have intensified their protest over the death of a motorcyclist during an incident involving the police in the cane-farming community of Little London.
Earlier today, the protestors set fire to cane fields as they demanded justice.
They have also blocked the main roads in Retreat, Little London and Sheffield.
The Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture and Fisheries, JC Hutchinson, is calling for an immediate increase in police presence in the parish to deal with the matter.
"The situation is spiraling out of control as the fire is causing extensive damage to both privately-held property of local farmers and acreage held by the Chinese owned Pan-Caribbean Sugar Company," Hutchinson said.
The motorcyclist died after crashing into a culvert while reportedly being chased by the police.
"While a wave of controversy ensues as to the circumstances under which the motor cyclist died, there can be no good reason for ostensibly aggrieved persons to take matters into their own hands and embark on a campaign of harrow and destruction," Hutchinson said.
