CDA dispatches grief counsellors

Published:Sunday | February 1, 2015 | 6:17 PM

The Child Development Agency (CDA) has deployed a team of first responders to communities where children have died violently in the course of the last week.

At least four children between the ages of three and 14 years died under violent circumstances in the past week.

Among them are:

- Fourteen-year-old Santoya Campbell of Frome in Westmoreland, whose body was found in the parish

- Three-year-old Crystal Coleman of St Mary who were reportedly murdered and

- Fourteen-year-old Treshauna Henry, also from St Mary, whose cause of death is still unknown

The CDA says the responders will provide grief counselling and other emotional support to the families of the deceased.

The Ministry of Youth and Culture, under whose purview the CDA falls, says the agency has already conducted preliminary intervention and will be, over the course of the next two weeks, holding parenting sessions in the communities.

The sessions will be conducted in partnership with the Office of the Children's Registry and will focus on grief counselling and childcare and protection, among other things.
