University of Guyana students mount road block

Published:Wednesday | February 4, 2015 | 2:38 PM

Students at the University of Guyana yesterday blocked the entrance to the tertiary institution in support of lecturers and other staff seeking increased salaries.

The students also called for a better environment at the university including an up-to-date library, improved security, free Internet access, better laboratories and modern classroom technologies.

The university has appealed to staff members to end their industrial action.

The workers are demanding a 60 per cent salary increase.

However, the university has said it can only increase salaries if government increases its subvention, and if it decreases part-time expenditure by 50 per cent, reduces programme offerings with low enrolment and maintains an increase in tuition fees.
