University of Guyana students mount road block

Students at the University of Guyana yesterday blocked the entrance to the tertiary institution in support of lecturers and other staff seeking increased salaries.



The students also called for a better environment at the university including an up-to-date library, improved security, free Internet access, better laboratories and modern classroom technologies.



The university has appealed to staff members to end their industrial action.



The workers are demanding a 60 per cent salary increase.



However, the university has said it can only increase salaries if government increases its subvention, and if it decreases part-time expenditure by 50 per cent, reduces programme offerings with low enrolment and maintains an increase in tuition fees.
