JLP Standing Committee supporting Holness

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) General Secretary Dr Horace Chang has released a statement saying the party's Standing Committee is supporting Opposition Leader Andrew Holness.

There have been calls for Holness to resign since the Constitutional Court ruled that he was wrong to have submitted undated, pre-signed resignation letters to the Governor General to remove Arthur Williams and Dr Christopher Tufton from the Senate.

The JLP Standing Committee discussed the Court ruling tonight during its regular meeting.

According to Chang, the Committee noted that Holness acted on the advice of trusted counsel and his "sole motive" was to protect and safeguard the Constitution.

The letters were crafted by Williams and were to have been submitted to the Governor General if any senator departed from the Opposition's position on a referendum for the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

However, the letters for Williams and Tufton were submitted to the Governor General because they did not support Holness in the November 2013 JLP leadership election between Holness and Audley Shaw.
