Barbados to roll out improved working conditions legislation

Published:Friday | February 13, 2015 | 2:42 PM

Two pieces of gender neutral legislation will soon be rolled out to make the working environment in Barbados more comfortable, safe and inclusive.

Bajan Labour Minister, Dr Esther Byer says there are too many people who literally become sick at the thought of going into the workplace as a result of stress.

Byer says the Anti-discrimination in the Workplace legislation and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace laws are subject to some changes before going before parliament but will be ready for tabling in short order.

She explained that while in some places these pieces of legislation are for the entire country, they have been met with some opposition in Barbados and could take at least a decade to be passed.

Categories to be protected under this new legislation include race, country of origin, political opinion, colour, creed, sex, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, maternity, family responsibility, medical condition, disability and age.
