Acting Mayor of Portmore Leon Thomas has called on Local Government Minister Noel Arscott to make additional resources available to the municipality so it can further improve the quality of life for residents.

The call comes as the acting mayor revealed that the Portmore Municipality achieved a 98 per cent collection rate for property taxes in the last financial year.

According to him, the municipality collected J$272 million of the J$335.5 million target set by the local government ministry.

Thomas acknowledged that Portmore received a J$5 million incentive for its achievement, but says that is already being used to carryout road repairs, drain cleaning and various beautification projects.

Noting that there has also been a significant improvement in garbage collection, the acting mayor told The Gleaner-Power 106 News Centre that more could be done to encourage residents to continue paying their property taxes.
