Tributes come in for Rev Glen Archer
The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has joined those mourning the death of well-known educator and Spelling Bee coach, Rev Glen Archer.
Rev Archer died this morning at The University Hospital of the West Indies where he had been admitted for more than a month. He had been suffering from chronic kidney failure and other ailments for some time.
Both Opposition leader Andrew Holness and spokesman on Education and Youth, Kamina Johnson- Smith, expressed sadness at the passing of the famed educator and coach.
Holness, a former education minister in the Bruce Golding cabinet, says Rev Archer's advice, guidance and "sharp humour" will be missed. He adds that his death has left a gap in the educational arena.
And Johnson-Smith described Rev Archer as a dedicated educator who had set and maintained high standards. She expressed condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Members of the Ardenne High School family, today, described Rev Archer as a passionate and committed educator.
Rev Archer taught at Ardenne for about 36 years. Principal Nadine Molloy says his name had become synonymous with the institution and with excellence.
And former principal of the Ardenne High School, Esther Tyson, described him as a man committed to his purpose and his country.
Molloy says full tribute to his memory will be organised when the school community returns from its mid-term break next week.
Archer, a trained theologian, was the country's most successful Spelling Bee coach. He coached 26 National Champions in the Gleaner-Children's Own Spelling Bee competition.
He was also the coach of Jody-Ann Maxwell, the country's first and only Non-American to win National Scripps Howard Spelling Championship in the US.
Rev Archer was conferred with the Order of Jamaica, the country's sixth highest honour, by the Government of Jamaica and recently received a Special Award for education as part of the The Gleaner's Honour Award for Excellence.
