General elections will be held on Monday August 27, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller told a rally of People’s National Party (PNP) supporters in Half Way Tree, St. Andrew tonight.

Mrs. Simpson Miller said nomination day would be Tuesday August 7, the day after Independence Day.

Her governing PNP has a seven percentage-point lead over the Bruce Golding-led opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), based on the most recent poll conducted for The Gleaner by pollster Bill Johnson.

Mrs. Simpson Miller and Mr. Golding will be contesting their first general election as party leaders.
