Government to centralise scrap metal industry
Industry and Commerce Minister, Karl Samuda revealed the government is working on a proposal to centralise the scrap metal industry in Riverton City, Kingston.
The Minister announced that regulations would be put in place to ensure that scrap metal vendors operate from that location.
Mr. Samuda said a compacting system would also be put in place for the export of other biodegradable material from Riverton City.
The Industry and Commerce Minister said all illegal scrap metal exporters have regularised their status.
Last year, there was an increase of vandalism and the theft of scrap metal islandwide for the export trade.
In October, the government imposed new regulations governing the export of scrap metal.
