National Budget jumps higher

Published:Friday | April 24, 2009 | 9:01 AM

The national Budget has been increased by $9 billion from $547.7 billion to $556.7 billion.

This follows last week’s deliberations in Parliament’s Standing Finance Committee before yesterday’s opening of the 2009-2010 Budget Debate.

Opposition committee members had lamented the scarcity of funds allocated for various ministries and agencies in the original estimates for this fiscal year.

The Finance Minister Audley Shaw had promised to make some amendments.

Yesterday, he tacked on an additional $9 billion to the Estimates of Expenditure.

However, it’s not clear which areas would benefit from the increase.

Mr Shaw could provide the explanations at a post Budget press conference slated for this morning.
