Foreign Affairs Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, says she’s awaiting word on the impact of Hurricane Irma on Jamaicans living in Florida.

Speaking through her official Twitter account, Johnson Smith said information is limited at this time.

However, Johnson Smith says the Consulate General of Jamaica in Miami advised this morning that many Jamaicans in Florida used a feature on Facebook to mark themselves as being safe.

She explains that there is currently a curfew in downtown Miami which prohibits efforts to check on the Consulate which is located in the area.

Johnson Smith is expressing thanks that staff members are safe even though they have no power and limited communication.
