JLP urges caution on discrimination in schools

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has urged school administrators to ensure that discrimination does not creep into the nation’s education system.

The appeal comes after an investigation by the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) found that former St Hilda’s Diocesan High School head girl Jade Bascoe was removed from that position because of discrimination.

In a statement released yesterday, JLP deputy spokesman on education, Robert Nesta Morgan, acknowledged the important role the church continues to play in the education system, but cautions that this role must be one where all stakeholders have a place at the table.

Morgan also appealed to school administrators to always be cognisant of the impact their actions have on children and recognise that students also have rights that are protected by the constitution.

He urged St Hilda’s to follow the OPD’s recommendation and re-instate Bascoe with an apology.
