The leaders of a combined population of 900 million visited Jamaica for the 1975 Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. Notwithstanding that Jamaica’s prime minister at the time, Michael Manley, was the organisation’s chairman, the visit of the region’s leaders spoke to the position of Jamaica as one of the foremost countries in the Commonwealth.
