Photo Flashback: A look at the Baby Show Competition in the early years

These two healthy specimens of babyhood are prizewinners for the Twin Competition during the Baby Show in May 1955. They are Stewart and Newton Brown of 96, Mark Lane, and both attracted lots of admiring comments for their excellent condition.
Champion baby at the fifth annual Baby Show of the Caymanas Child Welfare Association in 1955 was two-year-old Sonia Fisher, who is sitting with her mother and holding the silver cup. Her sister Monica (Standing) won second prize in the class for three- to five-year-olds.
Sister Betty McFayden (extreme left) presents the Cow Cup won by 10-month-old June Greaves in the Cow & Gate Baby Show at Issa's of King Street in May 1960. Receiving the cup is Mrs Horace Greaves, mother of the champion Baby. Others from left are Hallie Hemming holding second-prize winner Christopher deMontagagnac, six months, and Mrs Alan Sullivan with Christine Elizabeth Sullivan, 11 months, winner of the third prize. All babies were awarded cups.

Eleven-month-old Anthony Garel, 1966 winner of the Cow and Gate Cup, and his mother, Mrs Leo J. Garel. The Baby Show competition took place on May 5, 1966, in the children’s department, upstairs London Shop. Anthony was one of 40 babies entered in the show. He weighed 23lb 2oz.

Parents were proud to show off their babies in the annual Baby Show Competition. It was always a highly anticipated event with lots of prizes and surprises.
