Love Corner: Love vs Lust

Published:Tuesday | September 29, 2015 | 12:00 AM

Lust can be classified as a misguided thirst for satisfaction. It is also an uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire, appetite lecherousness, passion or overmastering desire or craving.

Lust is like a warning light on the dashboard of your heart, alerting you to the fact that you are not allowing God's love to fill you.

Last week's Love Corner reminds you that love seeks to understand, and this week we explore love versus lust. Can you identify the difference?

Many persons do not know the difference between lust and love, and end up in an endless cycle of regret and condemnation.

But we sometimes set our eyes and hearts on seeking worldly pleasure. We try to meet legitimate needs in illegitimate ways. For many it's seeking sexual fulfilment in another person or in pornographic images and videos. We can barely turn our eyes away. And once our eyes are captured by curiosity, our hearts become entangled. Then we act on our lust.

We can also lust after possessions, power or prideful ambition. We see what others have and we want it. Our hearts are deceived into saying, "I could be happy if I only had this." Then we make the decision to go after it.

"But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction." (1 Timothy 6:9)

Sexual lust can be identified when someone is totally focused on a person's looks and body instead of getting beyond the physicality to form a committed relationship. They are also more interested in having sex, and the relationship is kept on a fantasy level with no discussion about real emotional feelings. In other words, you are lovers, but not friends.

In this case, lust means to set your heart and passions on something forbidden. That's because every object of your lust represents the beginnings of a lie.

Bear in mind that lust always breeds more lust. And if you continue to lust after sex or power, it will make you dissatisfied with your husband or wife. It breeds anger, numbs hearts, and destroys marriages. Rather than fullness, it leads to emptiness.

Love can easily be identified by actions rather than words. When someone loves you, they want to spend quality time with you, and not just sex. You get lost in conversations and forget about the hours passing. Love makes you want to honestly listen to each other's feelings and make each other happy. One of the most important ways someone shows love is that he or she motivates you to be a better person.

Be sure not to ignore the red flags. Be sure not to turn a blind eye to lustful act, but identify true love, which is of God.

"Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him". Lust is the best this world has to offer, but love offers you the best life in the world.

Identify every object of lust in your life and remove it. Single out every lie you have swallowed in pursuing forbidden pleasure and reject it. Lust cannot be allowed to live in a back bedroom, it must be killed and destroyed - today - and replaced with the sure promises of God and a heart filled with His perfect love.
