Minding Your Business with Shavelle Mayler

Published:Monday | April 8, 2019 | 12:00 AM

Hectic! That’s the only term that entrepreneur Shavelle Mayler thought of when asked to describe a day in her life. The 26-year-old communication specialist is the managing director of SCM Consulting Services Limited, where they manage giant corporate accounts. This single mother toiled incessantly and even tripling her efforts in the last three years to successfully establish herself as a businesswoman. So, Flair asked the question, how does she mind her business?

The Northern Caribbean University graduate has been practising in her field for five years. Ever since her exposure to the area, she longed to stand on her own footing. The arrival of her daughter in 2016 forced her to choose between miserably working a nine-to-five for the rest of her existence and bravely exploring her passion and sticking to it. Giving a detailed account of this moment, Mayler described it as a game changer, and noted that choosing the latter was one of the best decisions she has ever made.

Mayler starts her days early. Routinely awaken by two alarm clocks at 6:30 a.m. or an hour later if she’s extremely tired, the young self-starter lives by daily schedules.

For her, balance is the most crucial asset that keeps her on top of her game. It’s an ability that wshe thought she had mastered years ago, but came to realise that she hadn’t. That’s until she stepped out into the enterprising realm that the boss lady actually learnt to evenly distribute weight in the different aspects of her life.

“I schedule everything, from the time I need to be somewhere to how long I need to be there, and when to leave. My phone is my calendar that’s where I make my plans. This keeps me on top of things and prevents me from getting carried away. Also, I try not to go over time in any of my activities, not even for a minute,” she explained.

The well-timed reminders also helps the specialist to manage the office.

“2018 was the biggest and hardest year of my life. That’s when I made the decision that I was going to go full on with entrepreneurship and the first risk I made. I’m learning from all the benefits from the seeds that I sewed. I made sure to learn all the tricks and trade and network as much as I could before stepping out,” said Mayler.

Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, risk taking has played a pivotal role in her accomplishments. It’s another principal trait along with patience, which she believes every business person should adopt.

Reminiscing on the start-up ride, Mayler explained that working for free to prove her worth was the most pronounced business compromise she’s ever made.

She leads with an arsenal of creativity and asserts that this allows her to remain relevant and competitive in the public relations arena. She marvels the fact that her ingenuity sets the record for her and the business’ reputation. And thinking outside of the box is what she asserts earns her profits.

And when it gets stressful, tucking herself away in a quiet area with a book, a trip to the beach, or a tranquiil painting session always seems to save the day.

Mayler is committed to continue serving her clients efficiently. And although she has proven to herself that she has reached the helm of success, she is still willing to learn to how to greater manage her business.

She says: “I love learning and that’s one of the things you have to ensure you do as an entrepreneur. It is not to just stick to what you know, but try to figure out what happens around that because everything has an impact.”
