In celebration of Farm to School Month, Obama invited students from Arizona, California, and Ohio to participate in the fall harvest. These schools were selected because they are participating in farm to school programmes that incorporate fresh, local food into their school meals, and they teach students about healthy eating through school gardens and nutrition education. For the month of October, Consolidated Bakeries Limited has launched a campaign titled Support Life, Fight Breast Cancer, which will see part proceeds of the sale of its Purity Hearty Goodness 100% Whole Wheat Bread being donated to the Jamaica Cancer Society in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

To be recognised with the cause, Consolidated Bakeries has made changes to its Purity Hearty Goodness 100% Whole Wheat Bread. As such, the bread packaging boasts pink to replace its usual red colour and is also marked with the pink ribbon representing breast cancer.

Endorsing the effort of Consolidated Bakeries, Yulit Gordon, executive director of the Jamaica Cancer Society, stated, "The Jamaica Cancer Society welcomes this partnership with Consolidated Bakeries through their Purity brand as we unite to increase the level of awareness among consumers. We continue to make an appeal to all Jamaican women to do monthly breast self-examinations and to visit the society to get their mammograms done."

MAJOR ISSUE

She further said: "Breast cancer is a major public-health issue and a threat to national economic and social development for Jamaica. One in 21 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, which continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican women."

Consolidated Bakeries reinforces the message of the Jamaica Cancer Society and has committed itself to ensuring that Jamaican women follow through with getting regularly screened. As such, funds to be donated will go towards assisting females with mammograms.
