Lawrence wins place on JLP ticket
Othneil Lawrence, the former member of parliament for North West St Ann who took the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)to court to prevent his replacement as caretaker for the constituency, yesterday romped to victory in the selection exercise at the Brown's Town Community College in Discovery Bay.
Lawrence finished with 303 votes, while Karen Chuck tallied 163 votes, and Ivan Anderson, who switched over from the People's National Party, secured 28.
In filing an injunction last year, Lawrence had accused JLP leader Andrew Holness and General Secretary Dr Horace Chang of flouting the party's constitution by attempting to remove him without a vote by the delegates.
He had also claimed he was being victimised because of his support for Audley Shaw's failed bid to replace Holness as party leader in a 2013 leadership election.
