National Emancipation and Independence celebrations will begin today with church services across the island.

According to Culture Minister Lisa Hanna, the church services will formally begin a week of celebrations that showcase the theme: 'Proud and Free! Jamaica 53'.

"There are a number of activities this year, and we want to get people really interested in the history, interested in the festival, and interested in our Independence," said Hanna.

The National Thanksgiving Service will be held at the St Jago de la Vega Cathedral at 1 Barrett Street in Spanish Town, St Catherine, starting at 10 a.m.

Other church services will also be held in various parishes across the island.
