The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and the Bureau of Special Investigations are probing a shooting incident in which a policeman's bullet hit a 19-year-old woman in the leg on Saturday.

The young woman has been identified as Chantal Allen, daughter of Head of the Traffic Police Superintendent Calvin Allen.

Cop hit by taxi

The incident took place along the Bernard Lodge main road in St Catherine early Saturday morning while Allen was a passenger in a taxi.

The Gleaner understands that while driving along the road, the taxi driver swerved to avoid a pothole and hit the policeman, who was walking along the roadway. The driver stopped the vehicle to assist the policeman, who pulled his weapon and opened fire.

Whether the policeman was on duty is not known.

The superintendent's daughter was shot in the leg during the gunfire. Her injury was not considered life-threatening.

INDECOM and the Bureau of Special Investigations have been notified of the incident. The Portmore police are carrying out their investigation.
